Brigadier General (Retired) John Adams understands the role of the U.S. Embassy Country Team and the interagency process from both practical and theoretical experience. He served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 2007, including 14 years’ service on five U.S. Embassy Country Teams and on the U.S. Delegation to the NATO Military Committee. As a military attaché, representing the Department of Defense, he was assigned to the interagency Country Teams in Belgium, Luxembourg, Rwanda, Croatia, and South Korea from 1994 until 2003. During two assignments at NATO Headquarters (1983-86 and 2004-2007), first as a captain then as a brigadier general (the Deputy Military Representative to the NATO Military Committee), he helped form U.S. policy in NATO working directly with the Department of State and other agencies at NATO Headquarters. Since retirement from active duty, he has conducted missions as a private citizen interacting with U.S. Embassy Country Teams in Egypt, Bosnia, Croatia, Brazil, and Cuba.
