Preventing and Confronting Domestic Abuse and Violence

Chad, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates

While in Michigan, nine (9) public health officials, nonprofit leaders and government officials will visit Detroit and Kalamazoo to interact with staff of NGOs, faith-based organizations, legal service providers, and government agencies to explore how these institutions function and how they collaborate to protect women and children, educate men and boys about their responsibilities, and educate victims about their rights. This program explores strategies to prevent and confront domestic abuse and violence in the United States, efforts to sensitize government and law enforcement officials to the needs of the abused, and strategies to support and protect survivors of abuse. The project examines civil society efforts to support victims  as well as legal efforts to prosecute perpetrators. Participants will examine what U.S. organizations are doing abroad to support programs that address the specific gender-based violence issues in their home countries.
