Stronger Communities Through Global Collaboration: MIBA Hosts Israeli Mayors
    August 19, 2026

Written by Bernard Bourgeois – Managing Director, Business Development

What can Israeli and Michigan communities learn from one another? That question was at the heart of a recent visit to Michigan, where MIBA welcomed a remarkable delegation of Israeli municipal leaders.  The delegation was part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), coordinated by Global Ties Detroit and Meridian International Center. The program focused on strengthening local government leadership through innovation, economic development, and community engagement.

The delegation represented one of the most diverse groups of civic leaders we’ve hosted. Mayors and council heads from Jewish, Arab, and mixed municipalities across Israel traveled together to explore best practices in local governance and economic development. Their willingness to learn together—and from one another—was a powerful reminder that shared challenges often create opportunities for shared solutions. The delegation included leaders from eight cities in Israel, five predominantly Jewish cities, two from Arab cities, and a mixed municipality consisting of the Jewish town of Ma’alot and the Arab town of Tarshiha, which were merged into a single municipality.

During their visit to MIBA, we shared how Michigan and Israel have built a thriving innovation partnership that delivers tangible economic benefits on both sides of the Atlantic. From helping Israeli companies establish their North American presence in Michigan to connecting Michigan companies with cutting-edge Israeli technologies, our work demonstrates how intentional international partnerships can strengthen regional economies, create jobs, and solve real-world challenges.

The discussion centered on the ingredients necessary for successful cross-border collaboration: trusted relationships, strong public-private partnerships, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a long-term commitment to building ecosystems rather than simply facilitating transactions. These are lessons that apply whether you’re attracting international investment, supporting local entrepreneurs, or revitalizing communities.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the visit was watching leaders from communities with different histories, cultures, and demographics engage in thoughtful conversations about common priorities. Regardless of whether they represented Arab or Jewish municipalities, every mayor shared a commitment to creating safer, more prosperous, and more innovative communities for their residents. Their collaboration throughout the program reflected the reality that effective local leadership often transcends political and cultural differences.

The delegation’s visit also highlighted the important role local governments play in fostering innovation. Municipal leaders are increasingly responsible for creating environments where businesses can grow, talent can thrive, and new technologies can improve quality of life. Those priorities closely mirror MIBA’s mission of connecting Michigan with Israel’s world-leading innovation ecosystem.

We are grateful to Global Ties Detroit for including MIBA in this important exchange and to the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program for creating opportunities for leaders to learn from one another. Programs like these strengthen not only individual communities, but also the international relationships that make future collaboration possible.

As the conversations around the table demonstrated, innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about people, partnerships, and a shared commitment to building stronger communities together.
