This US State Department-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) program brought 6 young English-speaking political leaders from Europe (Bulgaria, Germany, Latvia, Serbia, Sweden, and the UK) exploring Social, Economic and Political Issues. While in SE Michigan, the delegates met with leaders from the Dearborn Police Department, ACCESS, BRIDGES, Black Lives Matter movement, volunteered with Focus:HOPE, and attended an iftar (breaking the fast) at the Islamic Organization of North America (IONA). Additionally the European dignitaries enjoyed a Detroit Experience Factory tour, visited the Henry Ford Museum, and ran the 5K at the MIU Run for the Ribbon at the Detroit Zoo.
A lot of people spend half their lives to get the opportunity to meet the people that we met in just 10 days [in Detroit]. This concentration of knowledge and resources brought me one step closer to being global.
The opportunity to welcome and work with international delegations visiting Detroit provides a very rich experience. To be engaged in this work is significant and very rewarding. The world is becoming smaller every day and Global Ties Detroit contributes greatly in building strong bridges with people and nations across the globe.
